At Lowedges Junior Academy, we believe that PSHE (personal, social and health education) is an important and necessary part of children’s education. We recognize the importance of developing pupils to become responsible members of their academy and local community. We understand that life skills are essential aspects of a school’s curriculum and seek to develop in pupils a sound understanding of looking after their mental health. Wellbeing is a school priority for Lowedges Junior Academy. In PSHE lessons, we explore ways of keeping physically and emotionally safe, how to maintain physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing. We aim to provide children with the tools to understand how they are developing personally and socially and whilst doing so allow them to be able to successfully tackle many of the social, moral, spiritual and cultural issues that are part of growing up. PSHE education gives pupils the knowledge, skills, and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe and to prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. The subject equips the children to manage their lives, now and in the future.

Through PSHE, we aim for all pupils to know:

  • what is meant by a healthy lifestyle
  • how to maintain physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing
  • how to manage risks to physical and emotional health and wellbeing
  • ways of keeping physically and emotionally safe
  • about managing change, including puberty, transition and loss
  • how to make informed choices about health and wellbeing and to recognise sources of help with this
  • how to respond in an emergency
  • to identify different influences on health and wellbeing
  • how to develop and maintain a variety of healthy relationships, within a range of social/cultural contexts
  • how to recognise and manage emotions within a range of relationships
  • how to recognise risky or negative relationships including all forms of bullying and abuse
  • how to respond to risky or negative relationships and ask for help
  • how to respect equality and diversity in relationships
  • about respect for self and others and the importance of responsible behaviours and actions
  • about rights and responsibilities as members of families, other groups and ultimately as citizens
  • about different groups and communities
  • to respect diversity and equality and how to be a productive member of a diverse community, developing a sensitive understanding of the protective characteristics and responsible behaviours.
  • about the importance of respecting and protecting the environment within the Lowedges community and beyond
  • about where money comes from, keeping it safe and the importance of managing it effectively
  • the part that money plays in people’s lives
  • a basic understanding of enterprise

Although learning these things is part of the whole school experience, at Lowedges Junior Academy we teach this as part of our curriculum. Our PSHE education is focused around three core themes:

  1. Relationships
  2. Health and wellbeing
  3. Living in the wider world

The ACET Long Term Planning outlines the units each year group will study and the questions they will explore.

These topics are explored in various ways, drama, discussions, stories and practical problem solving. We place an emphasis on active learning. During these lessons we deal with diverse  beliefs, values and attitudes that individuals and society holds. Discussing these beliefs, allows children to develop their understanding of their beliefs, the world around them and how to communicate this with others.
