Active Travel

At Lowedges Junior Academy, we believe being active is extremely important for our physical and mental health. We encourage all our pupils to lead an active lifestyle including how they travel. We teach the children that switching more journeys to ‘active travel’ will improve their health and quality of life and also support the environment. These are ‘win-wins’ that will benefit individual people and the Lowedges community as a whole.

Active Travel Achievements, Events and Initiatives

Lowedges Junior Academy takes part in the Modeshift initiatives and continually promotes active travel. Each day, pupils are able to log their mode of travel to school on a WOW travel tracker register and earn badges for an active method. This engages the pupils and has wider benefits in the community, such as reducing pollution and making the school gates a safer zone. We have witnessed a significant increase in bikes and scooters being used as a mode of transport and as a result of this, new scooter pods have been installed for all of our pupils to ensure safe storage, which in turn has helped to increase the number of pupils travelling actively.

Lowedges Junior Academy has achieved the Silver award for Modeshift Stars ‘Active Travel’ in 2021-22 and is hoping to achieve the gold accreditation this academic year (2022-23)

At Lowedges Junior Academy, we have a very strong and enthusiastic Active Travel Team who work closely with Miss Smith to help promote active travel throughout the academy. The Active Travel Team have travelled into Sheffield on a public bus and visited the Lord Mayor as a reward for their dedication and hard work in relation to active travel.

During the winter months, Lowedges Junior Academy now hosts a ‘Be Bright Shop’ which sells bright reflectors and stickers children can purchase to ensure they are seen and safe when walking on public paths in the dark nights.
