Mathematics

At Lowedges Junior Academy, we are committed to providing high quality learning and teaching; enabling everyone to reach their full potential, whatever their age, ability, gender or ethnicity.

Mathematics is important in everyday life, and we develop the ability of pupils to solve problems, to reason, to think logically and to work systematically and accurately. All of our pupils are challenged and encouraged to excel in Maths. New mathematical concepts are introduced carefully to ensure a firm basis on which to build skills and knowledge. Arithmetic, key mathematical skills and knowledge are revisited and practised daily so that our pupils can recall and apply the correct knowledge and skill set when needed.

In order to ensure pupils at Lowedges Junior Academy have an in-depth knowledge of number facts, the Number Sense Number Facts Fluency Programme is taught in EYFS, KS1 and Y3 because it teaches a defined set of addition and subtraction facts and a defined set of calculation strategies using a systematic and structured approach.

The core facts are taught alongside 12 calculation strategies. Learning and applying these strategies gives pupils a deep understanding of numbers and number relationships.

TimesTables

At Lowedges Junior Academy, we place a strong emphasis on the teaching and learning of timestables because fluency, speed of recall and derivation of multiplication tables is vital and underpins learning in many areas of mathematics, freeing up cognitive capacity and supporting efficient reasoning. We aim for all pupils to recall multiplication facts by the end of Year 4.

The discrete teaching of the times tables occurs daily, at the start of every Maths lesson. Timestables will also be learnt, rehearsed throughout the day and a times table test will be conducted once every two weeks in order to monitor progress of pupils and plan next steps in learning. Year 4 pupils will undertake the national Multiplication Timestable Check. Specific interventions will be put in place where necessary.

All pupils at Lowedges Junior Academy have a login for Maths Shed. Once logged in, pupils can practise their Maths skills and timestables at home. Pupils login details are stuck into their planners at the start of the academic year – it is the same login for Spelling Shed.
